A Word to the Wise about Sand Flies

Bite Prevention and Treatment

Sandflies, commonly referred to as no-see-ums, exist in Exuma as in most tropical climates. Bites from these tiny creatures are most likely to occur at dawn or dusk, when there is little to no wind, right after it rains, and at night on the beach. People’s reactions to these bites range from minor to large welts or rashes that can persist for days and be very itchy.

Stay Bite Free

Try to avoid the beach right after it has rained. Keep your windows and doors closed. Use insect repellant such as OFF and/or baby oil.

But if you do get Bitten …

Despite taking the above measures you may still get bitten. If this does occur, do not scratch the bites as it can worsen and prolong the itching. We suggest immediately using an oral antihistamine or cream such as Benadryl. For those who prefer a natural approach, Tea Tree Oil is a natural remedy that some have found to be an effective topical treatment for bites.
